How to Shop for an Engagement Ring Together and Still Have a Surprise Proposal

There is a big list of reasons why it is a good idea to shop for your engagement ring together with your partner. Even though it’s not the most popular choice, looking at engagement rings together saves both of you a lot of trouble. There are all kinds of chances that you are taking by trying to buy the ring all by yourself. First of all, she may say yes but she might not love the ring and even though fixable, that’s a real sticky situation to be in.

Also, buying the perfect ring comes with such pressure! There are so many little details that go into making a great ring; from choosing the right metal that looks perfect with the sparkling center stone and making sure it’s all in your budget to hoping that you’ve chosen the exact kind of ring that she would like is not the easiest task. But these things run very smoothly when she can tell you exactly what’s on her mind and you can make an informed decision. Here are the things to keep in mind if you are planning to shop for an engagement ring but you still want to maintain the element of surprise while proposing.

Don’t Actually Purchase the Ring Together
Definitely choose the ring together and discuss about all the options available. It’s even a great idea to discuss your budget and financial investment in this engagement ring. You could even split the cost of the ring if that really works for you. However to have an element of surprise, don’t purchase the ring with your partner in the room with you. If she is not there when you place the order she wouldn’t know how long the ring is going to be in production and when it would arrive.

Leave a Few Undecided Details
It is not a bad idea to have your fiancé pick out the exact ring that she wants. But if you and your partner really care about having that element of surprise in the proposal then you could have her leave out some details. Both of you could together decide on the center stone and that’s it. Or she could give you an idea of metals, colors and stones that she prefers without being too specific and you could choose from the choices she has already made. Or in case her heart is set on a particular ring, maybe you could surprise her with a loving inscription engraved on the band.

Decide on the Whats; Don’t Decide on the Whens
Don’t decide on a date or time frame for the proposal to happen. Give yourself and your partner time to move on and not expect it “any day now!” If both of you aren’t in a rush to get engaged and/or married within the next 3-4 months, you could wait even longer. You could propose in a year, within the next couple months or right after the trip to the jewelers – keep her guessing!

Plan Something Big
So, your partner knows that you have purchased the ring so of course it’s clear that engagement is on the table. But she doesn’t know what to expect when it comes to the proposal. Here’s your chance to make her swoon and take her by surprise! Plan something that exceeds her expectations – make it special!

With a couple that communicates nothing much can go wrong. Congratulations on the engagement!
