Engagement Ring Trends of 2020 Part 1

It's that time of the year again when we review engagement rings of the past and present and predict the engagement rings we'll be seeing a lot of in the future. Without further ado, let's jump into our list of engagement ring trends for 2020. For more engagement ring trends, check out part 2 and part 3 of this series.

Halo Is Out, Pave Is In
The halo engagement ring setting is a very pretty and a very clever one. The aptly named "halo" of smaller diamonds surrounding the center diamond makes the center diamond appear bigger than it is. This optical illusion is why many budget-conscious couples go for the halo engagement ring. You get the big-diamond look for a lot less. But we are seeing a shift in popularity toward another sparkle-ful engagement ring setting, the pave setting.

Pave setting is where tiny melee diamonds are mounted on the jewelry with small blobs of metal, without any prongs. This technique gives the appearance of the jewelry being diamond-encrusted as the metal holding the diamonds in place fades into the backdrop of metal. The pave setting is also a great choice for couples looking at budget-friendly engagement ring setting. An engagement ring with a pave band adds plenty of extra sparkle to the ring so a budget-conscious bride can get away with a smaller, less expensive center diamond.

The pave trend is also influenced by some stunning celebrity pave engagement rings such as Brittany Snow's tasteful round diamond and thin pave band engagement ring. This is a design-classic that you can personalize according to your tastes. Take a look at this compass-point engagement ring from our latest collection. The ring features the two classic elements: solitaire center diamond and the twinkling pave band. The playful element of the prong placement adds a personalized touch to the timeless setting.

Here's another take on the solitaire center diamond with pave band engagement ring setting, the criss cross shank engagement ring from our latest collection. This delightful ring has an intertwined, twisting pave set band that adds visual interest and of course lots of sparkle.

Upgrading Your Engagement Ring and Wedding Band
This next engagement ring trend isn't one design but rather a change in the outlook towards engagement rings and 'engagement ring and wedding band' sets. Earlier this year, when Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, gave birth to her baby boy, she also created history by changing her engagement ring and wedding band set. The duchess used to wear a yellow gold wedding band along with her custom-designed three-stone engagement ring. While the yellow gold band remains unchanged, her new set includes another beautiful three-stone engagement ring setting and a pave-set eternity band.

Upgrading your engagement ring or adding a new wedding band following an important event (think, anniversary or the birth of your child) is a trend we absolutely love. Your tastes and where you are in life changes so it makes sense that you would want to see those changes reflected in your engagement ring and wedding band. Check our diamond upgrade policy here.

Ways to Make Your Engagement Ring Look Bigger than it is

Realistically size is not the main concern when it comes to diamonds and engagement rings. It is the feeling and thought that counts and um, also the cut of your stone that makes it sparkle the most it can. The thing with diamonds is that a small well cut diamond can be much more beautiful and brilliant than a big but poorly cut diamond that is dull. It is all about balance and research to land on the perfect engagement ring without spending a fortune. Here are the things to consider if you are on a budget and are looking for an affordable yet stand-out engagement ring.

Round Brilliants Are Great – What Else Is There?
Round brilliant diamonds are the most sought after and also the most expensive choice for engagement rings. Because they are so hard to cut into shape from a rough stone and result in a lot of wastage they cost way more than other diamond shapes that come with less wastage and more profit. When you consider different shapes of diamonds you will find that you could get a bigger diamond for the same budget you had for a smaller sized round brilliant. Consider buying oval stone; comparatively you will get much more stone for the money you invest.

The Type of Band and Prongs You Use Matters
The widths of the band you choose for your engagement ring determine how big or small your diamond looks. The wider your band is the smaller your diamond will appear. So the best way to make your diamond look relatively bigger is by choosing a slimmer band that gradually tapers as it gets to the center stone. Little details like this can make a huge difference. (Get it?)

It’s a similar thing with the prongs you decide upon for your ring. If you use slimmer prongs that do not completely hog and cover the stone and lets the center stone shine your diamond will look bigger than it would with thicker prongs.

Please Make Diamond Cut a Priority
Diamond cut should always be the number one priority. It’s the one thing that affects the look of your ring the most. It’s very important that you understand diamond cut before you decide on a purchase. You might think that buying a wider cut diamond that makes it look larger on top would be a good idea but that’s not the case at all. A wider cut will completely rob your diamond of its sparkle. If your diamond is large but dull then it’s not a good engagement ring anyway.

Go for a White Metal Band
Consider getting a 18K white gold band for your engagement ring. The rhodium platted white gold not only protects your engagement ring from scratches it also makes your diamond look bigger. 18K white gold is bright, shiny and is way less expensive than platinum!

Last but not the least; remember to keep your engagement ring clean so that it continues to shine as bright as it’s meant to!

Finding Her Ring Size — Engagement Ring Shopping Problem Solved!

So, you have found the one and you also found the perfect ring for the one — Congratulations. Now, the only thing standing in the way of you popping the question is finding her ring size. Well, fret not. We know some ways of finding her ring size, without her knowing it. Let's take a look at them.

1. Peek into her jewelry box

This is the simplest way to finding her ring size. "Borrow" a ring she already wears, take it to a jeweler to have it sized. If you can't get away with taking the ring for an extended period of time, two minutes is all you need. Trace the inner side onto a piece of paper and this can work as an estimate of ring size. Of course, this has to be a ring that she wears on her ring finger for an accurate ring size.

2. Recruit her friends to your mission

If you ask her friends or sisters, they would be happy to help you in your mission. If they don't know her ring size already, it would be a lot less suspicious if her friends take her engagement ring window shopping than you.

3. Hold Hands

Covertly compare your ring size to hers. Is her ring finger about the same size as your pinky finger? Do some guesstimation.

4. String method

This method only works for really, really sound sleepers :) Wrap a thin piece of string around her ring finger to get an accurate measure of her finger size. And then, use this table to find her ring size.

5. Ask Her

The proposal can be a surprise, the ring doesn't have to be. Many couples are choosing to do their ring shopping together. It makes sense because you'll get her exactly what she wants. But if you don't want to choose this option, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

A. Most jewelers will size a ring one size up or down at no additional cost. But certain ring styles are difficult to resize such as tension set rings, eternity rings and stones with side stones.

B. Get a temporary setting and use that one to propose.

C. B2C Jewels offers a free ring size kit and a 30 days no questions asked returns policy which you can use to get her the diamond engagement ring of her dreams.

Which one of these methods will you try?
