The Fascinating World of Fancy Colored Diamonds

The Gemological Institute of America grades diamonds on a scale of D to Z. D grade diamonds are the most colorless and brilliant, whereas G and H grade diamonds are nearly colorless. As you go down the chart the color grade of a diamond decreases and the tint of the stones become much more noticeable.

Diamonds that have an evident color are known as Fancy Color Diamonds. Fancy color diamonds are rare and quite fascinating! Blue, green, pink, red – these precious stones have the most gorgeous natural color that makes them perfect for unique pieces of jewelry, especially when used as a center diamond for an engagement ring. Here is everything that you need to know about these breathtaking gems!

How Are Fancy Color Diamonds Made?
The most magical thing about fancy colored diamonds is that it is a natural occurrence. The colors in diamonds come from tiny specs of impurities in the carbon lattice structure of the gemstone as it forms in the depths of the earth. The most common element found in diamonds is nitrogen, and depending on its concentration it can produce a yellow or brown tint in a diamond.

The very rare blue diamond has boron impurities in its composition and the purple ones are caused by a mix of crystal lattice distortion and highly concentrated hydrogen. The rarest fancy colored stone is the red diamond. It is so unique that there is not much information about its formation. However, scientists believe that unlike other fancy stones, red and pink diamonds are not caused by impurities but actually because of a natural alteration of its crystal lattice structure occurred in the diamond’s transportation to the surface of the earth.

How Are Fancy Diamonds Graded?
A diamond grading report by a reputable grading laboratory is the most important thing to consider when making a purchase. Grading fancy color diamonds is significantly different than grading colorless diamonds. Fancy diamonds are graded on a nine-point scale: Faint, Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Dark, Fancy Intense, Fancy Deep, Fancy Vivid. The difference between one level of saturation and the other can be between 50-100%. Laboratories use a list of 27 shades that make the entire spectrum of fancy color diamonds.

Buying a Fancy Color Diamond
As naturally occurring fancy color diamonds are so rare, they have extremely high values. These unique gemstones are immune from the unpredictable ups and downs of colorless diamond pricing around the world. The blue and pink fancy diamonds have a jaw-dropping financial track record of doubling in value every few years, which has piqued the interest of many.
